Interior Design History
The topic of interior design history is an
enthralling one and something that should really be explored at length. There are so many things to explore that
you may be surprised at just how long and colourful that history is. From the colourful seventies to the audacious
eighties to the techno style of the nineties interior design history has come a long way. But there is
more.
If you dig even further you'll also
discover that interior design history goes back farther than just the sixties or the seventies.
It spans centuries as well as spanning
continents, and it is admittedly one of the more interesting aspects of human life.
You can discern much about a culture by
the interior designs for that particular time, and you can tell a lot more about the people by how they have chose
to design their homes.
No two individuals are completely alike
and this is also reflected in the way they furnish and decorate their homes. Interior design history through the
centuries has demonstrated that two people living in the same era and even next to one another may not always
display the same outlook of society that a broad-spectrum view might give you.
For instance you may desire to have more
of an elegant and traditional design and feel to your home whereas your neighbor might have a preference for the
well-lived in look and spurn the elegance you so desire.
Viewed separately you achieve a cross cut
of one part of the social outlook for that era. And the interior design history student of the future may just be
forgiven for jumping to the conclusion that society during our time was either preoccupied with perfection, or on
the contrary that society had deteriorated to such an extent that homes were designed to look like
pig-sties!
The interpretation of what is discovered
is entirely up to their judgment and what society is like at that period of time as well.
So as the interior design history students
will also place different associations on what we perceive as the cause for a particular design in a particular
era. But there's no question that no matter what conclusions we come to there's nothing more captivating to look at
than our interior design history.
There is;
however, just one thing to be cautious of in looking at the interior design history. And that is to avoid deciding
that interior designs from any particular period of time did not have originality and
inventiveness.
From the plastic covered straight backed
chairs of the fifty’s to the bold patterns and colourhs as well as unique shapes in the seventy’s and the techno
modern look of the ninety’s the interior design will change with the times.
Relics and classics will always present
themselves in the individual and eclectic styles of some. Many times these designs are called retro.
This simply means that the interior design history gets a second chance and comes back into style; if only for a
while.
Today it is not uncommon to find many
designs of the past reflected in our present interior designs.
Sometimes people include many interior
design history hits in one home with themed rooms. A comfortable and bold patterned living room may just lead
to the techno feel in the family room and it is not uncommon to find the renaissance revival in the bedroom. What
ever your flare it can be found in interior design history.
