Residential Remodeling

Many people who have never considered remodeling their homes may find that circumstances have come about where taking that step makes a lot of sense.

Perhaps the resistance comes form "horror stories" of friends who had launched into remodeling projects at their residences only to see it all turn badly where they have to go to war with their contractor only to never really see the job finished completely. What does not get as much attention are the thousands of good and responsible remodeling contractors that do great jobs for very happy customers. Those stories don’t make the rounds as much as the horror stories.

The current real estate market actually creates a perfect scenario where remodeling will very often make more sense than selling your house with the intent of buying your dream home. Because of the credit situation that is going on, it is not only very hard to sell a home, it is getting almost impossible to get a loan to buy one. When property values are low like they are right now, selling your home means you could lose tens of thousands of dollars.

So if you can put together a home remodeling project that addresses the  problems you have with your current structure, that may be much easier to get accomplished than a real estate transaction.

In addition to avoiding a bad real estate market, home improvements increase the value of your home. Whether it is overhauling the kitchen or putting in a pool, anytime you spend money to make your property better, it will sell better when the time comes to move. For some consumers, bad market or not, circumstances demand a move.

Residential remodelingBut by investing a few thousand dollars in fixing the "blemishes" in your home and improving the "curb appeal", you can list that home for more money and get a higher return on your investment.

In almost all cases, renovating your own property will result in you recouping the funds from a higher sales prices and perhaps make money from the investment.

Selling your home is not the only reason to invest in remodeling however. For many who love their homes, there are always flaws or ways you can improve it to make it your "dream home".

If you chose to make the investment in the home that you raised your children in and make it the house you would love to grow old together in, you keep your neighbors and can stay in a neighborhood you are comfortable with and enjoy. These are all compelling reasons to consider taking on a remodeling project. So put aside the myths and stories and before you pass judgment, talk to some people who have had successful remodeling projects. The can help you make up your mind to take the step of making the great home you already home an even better one.
